DOT Motorcycle Helmets - Full Face Helmets - Shorty Helmet
What Are DOT Motorcycle Helmets?
DOT means Department Of Transportation, so if a motorcycle helmet is D.O.T. approved it means it fits the standards for safety should you be involved in a motorcycle crash. Your odds of surviving a crash while wearing a helmet that is DOT approved is higher than if you are wearing no helmet or a novelty only helmet.
What Kinds Of Helmets Are Considered DOT Approved?
There are several styles of helmets as far as looks go. First, there is the half or shorty helmet which covers the top of your head usually to just above your ears and eyebrows. Then there is the open face helmet or 3/4 helmet that covers the top of your head and the back of your head down to the top of your neck and above your eyebrows and ears. Then you have the full face helmet, that covers your entire head including your face with a see through visor in the front and covers all the way around including your face, ears to the top of your neck. What style you choose to wear is a personal choice. If you want the most coverage and want to protect your face from road rash or other injuries, you would choose a full face helmet as it covers your entire head. If you are the kind of person who is claustrophobic and cannot wear a full face helmet, then choose the 3/4 or even the 1/2 helmet.
